Sensorineural Hearing LossThis type of hearing loss happens when the nerves (hair cells) in the inner ear, or the acoustic nerves or auditory brainstem, suffer impeded functions. Sensory hearing loss means that damaged nerves in the cochlea are unable to adequately sense sound vibrations. Neural losses involve the acoustic nerves and brainstem centres. Most hearing loss is sensory, which can be readily treated with a hearing aid. Neural loss, involving damage to the acoustic nerve or higher centres, requires medical intervention in many cases.
